- Wine production in the Algarve dates back to Roman and Phoenician times. The Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers, is moderated by the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean, which provides a constant sea breeze. The region's soils are predominantly of clay-limestone, sandy, or schistous origin.
- In 1980, the CVR Algarve (Algarve Regional Wine Commission) was created, an entity that regulates and guarantees the certification and quality of wines produced in the region. Of the 73 grape varieties suitable for the production of Algarve wines, one is native: Negra Mole, considered the second oldest Portuguese grape variety. Also noteworthy are 5 varieties considered traditional: the red Castelão (the most planted red variety) and Trincadeira . Among the white varieties, Crato Branco ( Síría ), Arinto , and Moscatel-Graúdo stand out.
